Five-cornered contest likely in lone Mizoram Lok Sabha seat

AIZAWL: With the announcement former minister Nirupam Chakma as BJP's candidate for the lone Mizoram Lok Sabha seat, the coming election to the constituency is likely to be a five-cornered contest.Although the name of Chakma, a vice-president of the state BJP unit, was announced in Delhi, the state unit of the party is yet to officially announce his candidature.Ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) fielded former director general of Doordarshan, C. Lalrosanga, as the party's official nominee for the Lok Sabha polls, while opposition Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) and Congress-combine had announced that they would support independent candidate Lalnghinglova Hmar, a sports reporter and a state football association leader .People's Representation for Identity and Status of Mizoram party also had announced that one of its top leaders, TBC Lalvenchhunga, a former naval officer, would be the party's nominee, while former mining engineer with the Indian Bureau of Mining Lalhriatrenga Chhangte had announced his decision to contest the polls as an independent.Returning officer for the Mizoram Lok Sabha seat, Vanlalngaihsaka, said Lalrosanga and Chhangte had filed their nominations till Friday.Although there may be five candidates in the fray for the state's lone Lok Sabha seat, the main contenders will be the ruling MNF's nominee and the opposition ZPM-INC sponsored independent candidate.Meanwhile, former state chief minister and state PCC chief Lal Thanhawla on Friday alleged that MNF's ally at the Centre, BJP, intended to establish a Hindu kingdom in India and to introduce the Hindu way of life through the Uniform Civil Code.Lal Thanhawla said the proposal to legislate the Citizenship Amendment Bill was taken up by the BJP-led NDA, in which the MNF was also a partner in the alliance.He quoted AICC president Rahul Gandhi as saying that The Citizenship Amendment Bill would not be re-introduced in Parliament if Congress comes to power at the Centre and the Congress would never allow its introduction if other political parties come to power.
