Congress brings out the big guns in final Assam list

He was denied a ticket by BJP in 2016, prompting him to return to his old party.“BJP has been campaigning that we have a secret understating with AIUDF and so we will field weak candidates against them. We have proved them wrong. The younger Ajmal has opted out of race this time and AIUDF has fielded another person in this seat.In Dhubri, which has the highest concentration of Muslim voters and Ajmal’s seat for the last two terms, Congress has fielded Abu Taher Bepari, who returned to Congress in 2017 after staying with BJP for almost one year.Bepari, a prominent leader of the minority community, has been winning Golakganj assembly seat on Congress ticket for two consecutive terms from 2006 to 2011.

Guwahati: Silencing BJP’s repeated claims that AIUDF will have weak competitors in minority-dominated Barpeta and Dhubri to ensure a cakewalk, Congress on Friday fielded two of its strongest candidates for the two seats—one a sitting MLA and another, who has never lost an election.After much internal bickering over selection of candidates for these four seats, Congress finally decided to field Abdul Khaleque, a former journalist and sitting legislator for Barpeta, which is currently held by Badruddin Ajmal’s younger brother, Sirajuddin. Both Rabha and his rival Sarania are non-Bodos in this constituency where non-Bodo voters outnumber the Bodos. The two will be pitted against BPF minister Pramila Rani Brahma, who has been fielded as the BJP-AGP-BPF alliance candidate.
