AIUDF: Thought Congress would return favour in kind

  • | Monday | 1st April, 2019

As we had already declared our candidates in Barpeta and Karimganj seats, Congress should have left these seats for us,” said AIUDF general secretary Falzul Karim Quasimi. But according to AIUDF, the ‘secular votes’ will get divided in both the constituencies as the Grand Old Party is contesting polls. In Karimganj, which is a Scheduled Caste-reserved seat, Congress has fielded Swarup Das.In this seat, incumbent MP Radheshayam Biswas of AIUDF is contesting again. AIUDF did not contest more than three seats because it is losing support. We sacrificed five seats to stop BJP from taking advantage of the division of secular votes.

Guwahati: The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) is upset over Congress not reciprocating to its gesture of not fielding candidates in more than three seats for the sake of preventing division of ‘secular votes.’“We would have been happy had Congress not fielded candidates in Barpeta and Karimganj parliamentary constituencies. We sacrificed five seats to stop BJP from taking advantage of the division of secular votes. As we had already declared our candidates in Barpeta and Karimganj seats, Congress should have left these seats for us,” said AIUDF general secretary Falzul Karim Quasimi. He, however, added that AIUDF has not entered into any electoral understanding with the Grand Old Party.“We took such a big step by leaving five seats. Congress should have been considerate to our gesture even though we do not have any formal understanding with it,” said Quasimi. In response to AIUDF’s reaction, Congress said the question of leaving any seat to AIUDF does not arise as it was AIUDF’s own decision not to contest five seats.“Congress is a secular party and enjoys significant support from different sections of voters. AIUDF did not contest more than three seats because it is losing support. There cannot be any understanding with a party which is losing its support base,” said Congress general secretary Apurba Bhattacharya. In Barpeta, which will go to the polls on April 23, Congress’s Abdul Khaleque and AIUDF’s Hafiz Rafiqul Islam are in the fray. In Karimganj, which is a Scheduled Caste-reserved seat, Congress has fielded Swarup Das.In this seat, incumbent MP Radheshayam Biswas of AIUDF is contesting again. Both the constituencies have over 50% minority voters. BJP’s Kripanath Mallah is also in the fray in Karimganj that will go to the polls on April 18.In Barpeta, AGP candidate and former party MP Kumar Depaak Das is also in the race.Congress said it has fielded candidates in both Barpeta and Karimganj following a ground assessment. But according to AIUDF, the ‘secular votes’ will get divided in both the constituencies as the Grand Old Party is contesting polls.
