Fiction Writer Purabi Bormudoi Passes Away At GMCH

Staff ReporterGUWAHATI: Noted fiction writer and critic of Sahitya Akademi repute Purabi Bormudoi passed away at the GMCH (Gauhati Medical College & Hospital) here this morning. Her body was handed over to the GMCH, fulfilling her wish. Even as she started her career as a teacher, she gave up her service and devoted herself fully in literary works. In a condolence message, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said the people of the State will remember with respect what the writer contributed to the Assamese literature in her lifetime. Staff Reporter GUWAHATI: Noted fiction writer and critic of Sahitya Akademi repute Purabi Bormudoi passed away at the GMCH (Gauhati Medical College & Hospital) here this morning. Her body was handed over to the GMCH, fulfilling her wish. Born on May 8, 1950 at Deuri Gaon in Tezpur, she had her schooling from Tezpur Government Higher Secondary Girls School, graduation from Darrang College and MA in History from Gauhati University in 1973. Even as she started her career as a teacher, she gave up her service and devoted herself fully in literary works. She got a number of awards for her creative works – Basanti Bordoloi Award in 2000 for her novel Gajaraj, Prem aru Bonditwo, the first Sadou Asom Lekhika Somaroh lekhika bota in 2006, Saganlal Jain Literary Award for her novel Rupowali Noir, Sonowali Ghat in 2006, Prabin Saikia Award in 2007 for a collection, Sahitya Akademi Award in 2007 for her novel Santanukulanandan, Assam Valley Literary Award in 2011 and the lifetime achievement award from NRL in 2018. A few other titles to her credit are Baghshal, Baghjal aru Manu; Sheetor Kuwoli; Purabi Bormudoir Nirbachito Golpo (Part-1); Porom Pujoniyo aru Duhkon Upanyas; Eti Ali Bator Itikotha; Obosheshot Borushon; Xoponor Ghor, Ghoror Xopon; Heruwajonok Bisari aru Onyanyo Golpo etc. In a condolence message, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said the people of the State will remember with respect what the writer contributed to the Assamese literature in her lifetime. She enriched the literature of the State with her historical novels, he said. Her demise is an irreparable damage to Assam, the Chief Minister added.
