Opening the new look police station here on Saturday, Sonowal said only infrastructure development would not suffice to improve the overall quality of policing. Under MOITRI scheme, Dispur has taken up initiatives to reconstruct buildings of police stations and develop infrastructure with improved public amenities. Staff Reporter GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has expressed his optimism that with its modernized infrastructure the newly-constructed Basistha Police Station will be able to provide more people-friendly services. The police station has been reconstructed under Mission for Overall Improvement for Responsive Image (MOITRI) Scheme. The police station was established in 1984. Opening the new look police station here on Saturday, Sonowal said only infrastructure development would not suffice to improve the overall quality of policing. He urged the police personnel to be more responsible and responsive towards public. He appreciated the role played by the Assam Police in unleashing remarkable anti-corruption drive and maintaining law and order in the state. He said that the State police have been successful in earning peoples confidence and they must continue their efforts to keep it up. Under MOITRI scheme, Dispur has taken up initiatives to reconstruct buildings of police stations and develop infrastructure with improved public amenities. A total of Rs 2.62 crore has been spent for the reconstruction of Basistha Police Station. The State Government under MOITRI scheme has adopted a visionary programme of reconstructing 346 police stations with an outlay of Rs. 2 crore for every police station to be reconstructed and refurbished within 5 years. In the first phase, 73 police stations were earmarked. Sonowal referred to the meetings of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with DGPs from all over the country in the recent years where he emphasized on the improvement of the overall quality and efficiency of police forces to make smart police. He also appreciated the Assam Police for improving cordial relations with the public and urged them to continue to get closer to people. The Chief Minister said that the State Government is going to provide 1,000 houses for police personnel during the first phase of housing scheme. Modern weapons, improved logistical support and cyber crime fighting facilities like Cyberdome are all being provided to the Assam Police, he said. Sonowal said that the State government aims to strengthen unity amongst the people by bridging the gap between police and public. Dispur MLA Atul Bora, MLA Tingkhang Bimal Bora, DGP Kuladhar Saikia, Kamrup Metro Commissioner of Police Dipak Kumar also spoke at the programme.
