The accusing finger for such a high percentage of road accidents on national highways in the State will certainly point at their improper maintenance. What is startling is that as many as 1,427 road accidents occurred on national highways in 2016 against 567 on state highways and 578 on other roads in the State in 2016, as many as 1,464 road accidents on national highways against 582 accidents on state highways and 737 accidents on other roads in the State in 2017, and 1,623 road accidents on national highways against 616 on state highways and 727 on other roads in the State in 2018. Such a question arises because as high as 48 per cent of the total road accidents that occurred in Assam in 2018 are on national highways. This is against 26 per cent accidents each in State highways and other roads in the State during the period. The accusing finger for such a high percentage of road accidents on national highways in the State will certainly point at their improper maintenance. An analytical glimpse on road accidents in Assam by the State police force has also revealed a number of other startling facts. According to the survey, the average daily road crash fatalities were eight and injuries were 20 in 2018 in the State when road accidents rose by 15 per cent from 2017. Road accidents and fatalities maintained a rising trend in the past five years till 2018. According to the survey, while 7,144 accidents occurred in 2014 leading to the death of 2,522 people, the number of people killed in road accidents in 2015 was 2,397. In 2016, deaths in road accidents rose to 2,572 and maintained the rising – 2,783 in 2017 and 2,966 in 2018. The districts where road accidents showed an increasing trend in 2018 are – Kamrup (M), Kamrup, Nagaon, Cachar and Barpeta. In 2018, the lowest number of road accidents occurred in Majuli and Dima Hasao, lower than the number of accidents occurred in 2017.
