STAFF REPORTER GUWAHATI: As per Assam government norms, provincialised colleges of Assam are required to deposit 70 per cent of tuition fees of the students into the government exchequer. A notification was forwarded to the Higher Secondary and Junior Colleges in 2016-17 that students of families of with an annual income of less than a lakh are exempted from the admission fees. However, besides the admission fees, added fees charged by the colleges which included the tuition fees, were still collected. At a formal enquiry made by the Director of Financial Inspection, Assam of various colleges of the State, many college authorities were found neglecting their duty of depositing 70 per cent of tuition fees into the government exchequer. As such, a letter was forwarded by the Directorate of Higher Education to the principals of all the provincialised colleges of Assam, to deposit the 70 per cent of tuition fees (year wise) into the government exchequer within October 30 and submit the copy of the treasury challan along with detailed statement. A principal of a provincial college, while speaking to The Sentinel said, “It is necessary to conduct an audit before any deposit is made. The ones whose audit has been done have been sent, however, many are still pending and once that is done, we will deposit 70 per cent of tuition fees into the government exchequer.” Also Watch: Does Candidates from other states dominating Railway Jobs in the Northeast?
