STAFF REPORTERGUWAHATI: With their demand to not codify the Building and Other Construction Workers' Welfare Act, 1996, the Sadou Asom Nirman Sramik Union (SANSU) staged a protest at Guwahati Club on Monday. The protesters claimed that the central government is trying to vanish the particularity of the Building and Other Construction Workers' (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, 1996 by trying to add it with some other workers welfare act. The union said, “As, this act is different from other acts in terms of its practical manner, so adding this act with some other workers welfare act will make it lost its particularity. SANSU claimed that the construction workers have a distinct act that was enacted in 1996 and on the basis of that act the construction workers of Assam are being registered since 2010. The workers are getting some sorts of benefits through this act and codification of this act will disrupt its particularity.

STAFF REPORTER GUWAHATI: With their demand to not codify the Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Act, 1996, the Sadou Asom Nirman Sramik Union (SANSU) staged a protest at Guwahati Club on Monday. The protesters claimed that the central government is trying to vanish the particularity of the Building and Other Construction Workers (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, 1996 by trying to add it with some other workers welfare act. The union said, “As, this act is different from other acts in terms of its practical manner, so adding this act with some other workers welfare act will make it lost its particularity. Hence, the labors from construction sector will end up losing their benefit that they have been getting through this act. SANSU claimed that the construction workers have a distinct act that was enacted in 1996 and on the basis of that act the construction workers of Assam are being registered since 2010. The workers are getting some sorts of benefits through this act and codification of this act will disrupt its particularity. SANSU general secretary Madan Talukdar said, “The benefits that the construction workers are getting will not be able to claim, after it gets codified. Because, the money around Rs 42,000 crore deposited in Construction Workers Welfare association will go to the hands of central government. In case the government has to face loss after investing the money, the construction workers will get no benefit. Further there is no surety of getting the benefit that they are already being provided with. We will never let the government to grab this money. SANSU is totally against this and our appeal to the central government is that we will never let this act to be codified. If needed we will take further programme to protest against it.” SANSU said that they will send a memorandum to the Prime Minister so as to stop codification of this act.
