STAFF REPORTER GUWAHATI: Normal hectic life in the city on Tuesday came to a grinding halt due to an eleven-hour NE bandh call against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill with residents from almost all localities hit the streets to stage their protests. Since early morning to late evening, residents of Dharapur, Satmile, Jalukbari, Maligaon, Ulubari, Bhangagarh, Ganeshguri, Dispur Last Gate, Beltola, Rukimingaon, Basistha, Chandmari, Noomati and other areas continued their protests against the CAB. The situation turned tense on Tuesday evening the bandh supporters clashed with the police near Down Town Hospital. The police had to resort to lathicharge and use teargas to disperse the protestors. Two police personnel and a civilian were injured in the incident. Earlier in the day, the protestors pushed back the convoy of Education Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharyya when it tried to pass through the Six Mile flyover during the bandh hours. The protestors stormed into the residential campus of the BJP MP from Guwahati Quuen Ojha and staged demonstration against the CAB. The bandh supporters also staged protest in front of private residence of Cabinet Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma situated on Uday Path near Zoo Road. Members of the Sadou Asom Unnanyan Parishad staged protest near Dispur Last Gate to prevent government employees to attend their offices at State Secretariat. Residents from various localities, lanes and bye-lanes spontaneously blocked the GS Road, GNB Road and various other main roads by burning tyres, shouting slogans and displaying placards. There are reports of untoward incidents from different parts of the city. Barring pharmacies, not a single shop, commercial establishment, bank, educational institution, private and government office was seen opened in the city during the bandh.
