Staff Reporter GUWAHATI: The Assam Madrassa Co-Ordination Committee (AMCC) on Monday appealed Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to re-consider the decision of shutting down Madrassas and Sanskrit tols. AMCC urged the government to continue the Madrassa schools and Sanskrit tols under the state government as it has been managed since earlier. Addressing a press conference at Guwahati Press Club on Monday, the AMCC claimed that besides providing theological knowledge, the Madrassas strictly follow the governments order. Hence, it is a vague statement by the Education Minister that the Madrassas are prone to provide religious education to its students. The body said that besides teaching logic and philosophy in the Arabic language, the students are also taught subjects under the SEBA course including Social Science, Hindi, Assamese, Urdu, Bengali, Mathematics, and English. Assamese is taught as a compulsory subject in the Barak Valley. AMCC said that it has taken the decision to send a memorandum to State governor Jagdish Mukhi, CM Sarbananda Sonowal, Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and president Ramnath Kovind through the district commissioner of each district. Addressing the media persons, members of the co-ordination committee Moulana Fazal Uddin Bhashani said, “The coordination committee has decided to make a plea to Education Minister. The Madrassas have already been modernized several times. The Madrassas are functioning well under the government of Assam and it is imparting education that comes under the SEBA board. We have no issue if the government wants to modernize the Madrassas but we oppose the decision of converting Madrassas into high schools.
