Chimpanzees from Indonesia to arrive at Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden

STAFF REPORTERGUWAHATI: Chimpanzee, the animal is considered as the big crowd-puller will finally arrive at Assam State Zoo-cum-Botanical Garden in the city. The Assam State Zoo authority has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Taman Safari, Bogor, Indonesia to bring the chimpanzee. In the past there were several talks and plans to bring chimpanzees to Assam State Zoo. The Assam State Zoo authority will send the MoU to the Central Zoo Authority for approving the deal. The Assam State Zoo spreads an area of 175 hectares which include a botanical garden.

STAFF REPORTER GUWAHATI: Chimpanzee, the animal is considered as the big crowd-puller will finally arrive at Assam State Zoo-cum-Botanical Garden in the city. Interestingly, the animal will come from Indonesia. The Assam State Zoo authority has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Taman Safari, Bogor, Indonesia to bring the chimpanzee. As per the MoU, the Indonesian safari will provide two male and two female chimpanzees and two male and two female binturong. In exchange the Assam State Zoo will send a male and a female rhino. “It will take 10 months for the chimpanzees to reach the zoo here,” a State Forest department official said. In the past there were several talks and plans to bring chimpanzees to Assam State Zoo. But nothing has been materialized till this date. Visitors have been looking forward to a chimpanzee in the zoo for long as the animal is a big crowd-puller. Primate species including chimpanzees are on the verge of extinction, and scientists fear that without a concerted global effort they will soon be gone for good. The Assam State Zoo authority will send the MoU to the Central Zoo Authority for approving the deal. A new enclosure will be constructed for the animals coming from Indonesia. A Bangkok-based company, Goatrade Farming Co. Ltd, will assist both the Assam State Zoo and Taman Safari, Bogor, Indonesia in all possible details regarding animal exchange, provide advisory service in obtaining permission in procurement of CITES and health certificate, staff exchange programme, crating and transportation. The MoU has clearly mentioned that the animals shall be in good condition, free of any infectious or contagious disease and should be capable of breeding as and when they reach breeding age. The Assam State Zoo spreads an area of 175 hectares which include a botanical garden. The zoo has 110 species.
