Darrang: A government-run hospital in Assam’s Darrang district goofed-up by discharging a coronavirus positive patient instead of another patient who had recovered from the disease. The shocking incident took place at a Mangaldai Civil Hospital in Darrang district. The district authority has ordered a magisterial probe into the incident. According to the reports, Assam government approved a list of 14 people who recovered from the disease as they were admitted at Mangaldai Civil Hospital to get discharged from the government-run hospital.

The hospital authorities mixed up two similar names on the list sent by the state government and released the wrong patient. The hospital authorities took a decision to discharge a total of six patients among the 14 on the list. The migrant worker who was being treating at the hospital since June 5 and the other person with a similar name had been admitted at the hospital since June 3. Both hailed from Dalgaon area in the district.

On Wednesday, the authorities discharged five people from the hospital who recovered from the novel coronavirus and local MLA Gurujyoti Das, Deputy Commissioner of Darrang district Dilip Kumar Borah and Superintendent of Police Amrit Bhuyan were also present. But the hospital authorities mixed up the names and released the wrong man.

A senior doctor at Mangaldai hospital said that the near similar names of the two persons led to the mix-up. The discharged coronavirus patient reached his village around 9 pm on Wednesday in an ambulance. When the health officials realised the mistake, they immediately brought back him to the hospital on Thursday. Following the incident, Deputy Commissioner of Darrang district ordered a magisterial inquiry. Darrang district Deputy Commissioner Dilip Kumar Borah said over the phone that fortunately the discharged man has also tested negative now.

“Health officials have already taken the swabs of his nearest family members and declared his house as a containment zone,” Dilip Kumar Borah said. The Deputy Commissioner has also ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.
