BJP's Himanta Biswa Sarma Challenges EC's 48-hour Campaign Ban In Gauhati HC

The Election Commission banned Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma from campaigning in the assembly elections for 48 hours. Along with this, his brother Superintendent of Police (District Goalpara) Sushant Biswa Sarma has also been transferred from the district.

Senior BJP leader and minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has challenged the 48-hour campaigning ban imposed by the Central Election Commission in the Guwahati High Court his petition will be heard today by the court.

The Election Commission has banned Assam BJP leader Hemant Biswa Sarma from campaigning for 48 hours. The Commission has taken this action based on a statement made on BPF leader Hagrama Mohilary. Sarma had said that if Mohilari promotes insurgency with rebel leader M Batha, he will be sent to jail through the Central Investigation Agency NIA(which works under the administrative control of the central government i.e BJP). The Bodoland People`s Front (BPF) is an ally of the Congress in Assam and this party was earlier with the BJP.

An order issued by the commission on Friday said that the BJP leader`s brother "Sushant Biswa Sarma is been transferred to an appropriate post at the state headquarters and IPS officer Veer Venket Rakesh Reddy is posted with immediate effect as the new Superintendent of Police of Goalpara district". The district will go to polls on April 6 for the third and last phase.
