Jailed Akhil Gogoi wins Sibsagar seat, defeats BJP rival by 12000 votes

Gogoi, who has been in jail for more than 1 year, was arrested by the National Investigation Agency after his role in the movement against the Citizenship Amendment Act under the sedition and UAPA case.

Akhil Gogoi has become the first person to win the assembly elections from jail in Assam. He defeated his nearest BJP rival Surabhi Rajkonwari by 11,875 votes from the Sivasagar seat. The founder of the newly formed Raijor Dal has been in jail since December 2019 on charges of treason. Akhil Gogoi, who contested as an independent, got 57,219 votes which is 46.06 % of the votes.

Social worker Akhil Gogoi has won the election from Sivasagar Assembly Constituency in Assam. He has defeated the BJP candidate Surabhi Rajkonwar. Akhil was continuously leading since the counting of votes started this morning. Ajit Hazarika of NCP and Congress Shubhamitra Gogoi were also in the fray on this seat.

In the 2016 assembly elections, he defeated Congress candidate Pranab Kumar Gogoi on this seat. Even then, BJP candidate Surabhi Rajkumar was defeated by 542 votes. Gogoi has been considered the leader of farmers in Assam. Gogoi, who has been in jail for more than 1 year, was arrested by the National Investigation Agency after his role in the movement against the Citizenship Amendment Act under the sedition and UAPA case.
