The BJP has returned to power for the second time in Assam by winning 60 out of 126 seats in the assembly elections; however, BJP state president Ranjit Kumar Das has dissolved the party`s minority cell in the state, owing to poor performance of the party`s minority cell in the Assam assembly elections. The performance was so bad that even members of booth committees did not vote for BJP.
In view of this, The BJP has dissolved the State Committee, District Committee and Mandal Committee here.
Assam BJP President Ranjit Kumar Das by releasing a statement informed that the minority cell of the party has been dissolved indefinitely. The statement said that the BJP`s performance in the recent Assam assembly elections was poor in Muslim-dominated areas. Even members of booth committees did not vote for BJP so there is no need to continue with such non-cooperation.
BJP fielded its candidates on eight Muslim-majority seats of Jania, Jaleswar, Baghbar, Salmara South, Bilasipara West, Laharighat, Rupohihat and Sonai.
At the same time, BJP`s ally, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) contested three Muslim-majority seats of Chenga, Dalgaon and Jamunamukh. Both the BJP and AGP lost with a big margin in all these seats.
Out of 32-34 Muslim-dominated constituencies in Assam, BJP had secured only one seat (Sonai constituency in Cachar district) in the 2016 assembly election.
This time the Assam Legislative Assembly has a total of 31 Muslim MLAs and all of them are from Congress and AIUDF.
