A 28-year-old man, suspected to be a cow thief, was lynched by a mob on Saturday in a village in Assam`s Tinsukia district
A 28-year-old man, suspected to be a cow thief, was lynched by a mob on Saturday in a village in Assam`s Tinsukia district. However, the victim`s accomplice fled the spot. Police have detained 12 people in the case. Tinsukia SP Debojit Deori said that the incident took place in the early hours of Saturday at Korjonga Borpathar village under Baghjan police station in the district when the two were found near a shed built for keeping cows in a house.
The police have constituted a special investigation team headed by the Additional Superintendent of Police (HQ), which will probe the matter, an official said. The Special Investigation Team has detained 12 suspects of the village in this case. Deuri said the victim has been identified as Sarat Moran (28), a resident of No. 1 Kordoiguri village. The person who fled the scene has not been identified yet.
According to the villagers, the owner of the house saw two people near the shed built to keep his cow around 1.30 am and raised an alarm. He told that after this people gathered on the spot and started beating him. The Superintendent of Police said that the police got information about the incident at around 4.30 am. The police then took the man to the Doomdooma Government Hospital, where he was declared brought dead.
SP Deori said that when we handed over the body to his relatives after the postmortem, some people of his village tried to create law and order problem. However, when they came to know that we have taken action and have detained 12 people, the body was cremated peacefully. Deuri said that no one has the right to take the law into their own hands, even if there is a thief, and that the police will not spare anyone involved in this mob lynching.
