There was a ruckus in the Assam Legislative Assembly on Wednesday over the issue of border dispute with Mizoram. A heated argument ensued between the ruling party and the opposition, after which the Speaker had to adjourn the house for 40 minutes.

The entire opposition, Congress, AIUDF, BPF, CPI(M) and independent MLAs, came before the Speaker`s podium and demanded a thorough probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or the National Investigation Agency (NIA) along with placards showing " They raised slogans of "Give security to the people living in the border areas".

Legislators of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also came close to the Speaker`s podium to respond to the opposition`s allegations. The two sides were separated as the assembly secretary`s table was in the middle, but they were pointing fingers at each other and beat the table several times.

Assembly Speaker Bishwajit Daimary tried to calm down both the sides but seeing no success, he adjourned the house for 40 minutes. Earlier, Congress MLA Kamalakhya De Purkayastha raised the issue as a matter of order and informed the House that the problem with Mizoram started in October 2020.

He said, “We had written a letter to the central government informing about this issue. Even after that, why did the Assam Police personnel lose their lives? Whose fault was it?" Responding to this question, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika said that Assam and Mizoram are not two separate nations but two neighboring states of India.
