Assamese to be compulsory in schools till Class X

"A notification will be issued soon, making Assamese compulsory in the state's schools. Similarly, in the Bodoland Territorial Area Districts, students can choose to study Bodo instead of Assamese," Sarma said. GUWAHATI: On the lines of stipulations set by Kerala and Karnataka , the state is all set to make Assamese a compulsory subject in schools upto Class X, education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday. However, in Bengali-speaking areas, especially in the Barak Valley , students will have the option of studying Bengali as an alternative to Assamese.
