Similarly, in the Bodoland Territorial Area Districts, students can choose to study Bodo instead of Assamese," Sarma said. GUWAHATI: On the lines of stipulations set by Kerala and Karnataka , the state is all set to make Assamese a compulsory subject in schools upto Class X, education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday. However, in Bengali-speaking areas, especially in the Barak Valley , students will have the option of studying Bengali as an alternative to Assamese.
