DIBRUGARH: The Bogibeel, said to be the longest rail-cum-road bridge upon completion, has now achieved a different, though unflattering , distinction. The bridge has been in the construction stage for 15 years now, becoming the slowest-moving infrastructure project in the northeast. It was on April 21, 2002 that Atal Bihari Vajpayee inaugurated the construction of the bridge after his predecessor laid the foundation of the same on January 22, 1997. The sluggish pace of work has compounded the original Rs 1,767-crore budget for the 4.94-km-long bridge over the Brahmaputra to a whopping Rs 5,000 crore.Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) deputy chief engineer MK Singh on Saturday said the physical progress of the mega project stands at 75% and the pace of work has been expedited to complete the project by year-end. "As soon as the steel girder launching work is finished, which we expect by July, the railway tracks will be laid. That will be followed by roadway construction on the bridge's upper deck," he said.A record 70,000 MT of steel has been used in building the bridge superstructure, which has been designed by a Denmark-based company. The bridge, situated 17-km downstream from here, is also the first fully steel-welded bridge of the Indian railways. The bridge will have 42 piers and will have a three-lane road passing above a two-line railway track. The upper deck carrying the roadway will be 10.5 m above the railway line on the lower deck. The mega project includes construction of 29.45 km of road (including the bridge) and a rail link of 74 km. The road will connect to NH-37 on the south bank (Dibrugarh) and NH-52 (Dhemaji) on the north banks of the Brahmaputra.Meanwhile, it is learnt that the state government is keen on inaugurating the mega project on Atal Bihari Vajpayee's birthday which falls on December 25. The idea is to honour the former PM who had inaugurated the construction work of the dream project a decade-and-half ago.
