GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has lodged FIRs against its contractors and suspended engineers for neglecting work in artificial flood control. The GMC took these steps after residents complained of slow progress of work in combating artificial floods in the city. An FIR has been lodged against a contractor, Dewan Haidar Ali, at the Latasil police station for neglecting his duty of cleaning the drains. Two more complaints have been lodged against contractors Sajiya Begum and Pankaj Deka. A GMC engineer, Paresh Thakuria, has been suspended while another, Akbar Ali, has been served a showcause notice."It is high time that the work of cleaning the drains be completed. We have been monitoring the areas where works are on. If anyone is found neglecting their duties, strict action will be taken. This is just the beginning," mayor Mrigen Sarania told TOI.The contractors, however, met GMC commissioner Monalisa Goswami and assured her of completing the work.At least 30 contractors are involved in the project of cleaning up drains and other related works to counter artificial floods in the city. The mayor said the project would cost around Rs 38 crore. "As I have said earlier, we are taking things step by step. Initially, if we can complete the work in the low-lying areas like Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar and others, the residents will get a huge relief this time," Sarania added.Residents of low-lying areas were hit by the first spell of artificial floods weeks ago. "We are always scared of the flood. It's impossible to live here during the summer. We hope the GMC and the administration do something this time to provide us some relief," said Rakesh Das, a resident of Anil Nagar.
