Congress MLA stages protest against education department 'failure'

JORHAT: Congress legislator from Mariani, Rupjyoti Kurmi, staged a sit-in demonstration for two hours on Saturday in protest against the government's failure to take proper steps for development of the education sector in the state. As a result, the number of students has been decreasing in government schools rapidly and many educational institutions in the state have been closed due to lack of students." At the demonstration, Kurmi spoke about the lapses on the part of both the Union and state governments, particularly in the education sector.Kurmi said, "Besides the failure of proper implementation of Right to Education Act in the state, the education department has failed to appoint adequate teachers in schools and achieve a student-teacher ratio of 1:30. He also sent a memorandum addressed to chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal with a four-point charter of demands.The MLA, along with about 100 supporters, staged the protest in front of Thakur Prasad Middle English School at his constituency in Jorhat district for two hours from 11.30 am.
