GUWAHATI: The Union human resource development ministry's decision to close down the technical support group office of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) here has not gone down well with those working in the education sector in the region. The office was set up in 2006 to look after the affairs of elementary education in the northeast, including Sikkim. It will now be moved to New Delhi, from where all operational work will be done from July 1 this year. The office is involved in monitoring the elementary education of the region which is the core part of a project which makes it successful. The team members are involved in collection of data , support, analysis, interaction with the state bodies and providing reports among other works on behalf of the ministry of HRD.Under-secretary of Union HRD ministry Alok Jawahar has written to the SSA project director to carry out the necessary work. Though employees of the office have submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking his intervention to roll back the decision, they are yet to get any response from the PMO."Managing the projects in the northeast by the consultants and other government officials staying in New Delhi, who are usually reluctant to visit the region for various reasons, in the absence of a local office in Guwahati will not only adversely affect the interest of the people of the northeast but will put a question mark on Prime Minister's concept of 'developed NE'," stated the memorandum, which was sent on April 7.Many believe that this move will harm the education sector in the region. "It's not possible always to control things from New Delhi. I don't see any logic in shifting the office from Guwahati," said a school teacher who did not wished to be named.
