GUWAHATI: The BJP has swept the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) polls by winning 24 out of 26 seats and giving it a firm foothold in the Sixth Schedule administered area. Two seats were won by Independents.Assam state election commissioner H N Bora said counting of ballot papers, which started on Thursday, ended on Friday. Election to the KAAC was held on June 17.The KAAC election was the first major poll after the BJP-led coalition came to power in the state and new party president Ranjit Kumar Das took charge of the saffron party last year. While BJP maintained its winning graph (in successive polls since 2014 Lok Sabha election) with its victory in the KAAC, Congress, which ruled the council for three terms since 2001, has failed to win a single seat. Also, BJP's partner Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), which contested the KAAC polls alone, failed to open its account in the council polls.BJP bagged 24 seats which is a record since the creation of KAAC in 1952. In 1986, the Autonomous State Demand Committee won 22 seats. "We broke all the previous records of KAAC election this time. Congress, AGP and Hills State Demand Council (HSDC) are nowhere now. Even the six candidates, who dissented from BJP and contested the election by floating a new political outfit, have been routed. BJP's victory in the KAAC is a clear indication that the electorate in the hill districts have accepted the nationalist party," said BJP state president Ranjit Kumar Das.Das said BJP will decide the name of chief executive member of the council after discussion with local MLAs and also with other parties which are ideologically associated with the saffron party. "We will start discussion on the chief executive member once the government issues a notification. KAAC was an important election for us because it is a major growth area for BJP since 2004. Since 2004, BJP's strength has been growing in successive assembly and Lok Sabha elections. So, it is our responsibility to give a big push to the party this time so that it can give corruption-free governance in the KAAC," added Das.KAAC election's importance could be gauged from the fact that chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal , health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other ministers and legislators attended a series of election campaigns in the run-up to the polls."Our micro-management at the booth-level of our party helped in winning maximum seats. Through this micro-management, our grassroots workers were able to have mass contact with the electorate. This helped BJP significantly," added Das.
