At 38° C, city sizzles on year's hottest day

According to data available with RMC, the highest temperature ever recorded in the city is 40.3 C recorded on May 1, 1960. "Till today, the highest maximum temperature recorded in Guwahati during July was 37.5 Celsius. However, the day temperature is likely to come down tomorrow," said Shaw.With the mercury inching towards the 40 mark, it was a tough day for those on the streets of the city. The summer heat has become unbearable after rains wreaked havoc in Guwahati and other parts of Assam," said Ayush Agarwal , a trader from the Fancy Bazar area of the city. All records for the month have now been broken as mercury soared to 38.4 today.

GUWAHATI: After weeks of rain, Tuesday recorded a maximum temperature of 38.4 C in the city, making the day the hottest yet this year and the hottest ever day in the month of July.Deputy director general of Meteorology at the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Sanjay O'Neill Shaw told TOI that the maximum temperature of 38.4 recorded on Tuesday was the highest ever during the month of July. According to data available with RMC, the highest temperature ever recorded in the city is 40.3 C recorded on May 1, 1960."Till today, the highest maximum temperature recorded in Guwahati during July was 37.5 Celsius. This was recorded on July 13, 2009. All records for the month have now been broken as mercury soared to 38.4 today. However, the day temperature is likely to come down tomorrow," said Shaw.With the mercury inching towards the 40 mark, it was a tough day for those on the streets of the city. Very few pedestrians were seen in the afternoon. AC cabs were the preferred mode of transport, and it was a day of brisk business for roadside juice sellers.Even in other parts of the northeast, people struggled to beat the heat with several weather stations recording a rise in the mercury levels. In flood-hit North Lakhimpur , where power cuts have added to the misery, the temperature inched up to 38 C. Itanagar recorded the highest temperature in the region with the mercury touching 38.6 C.The maximum temperature recorded in some other locations on Tuesday are Dibrugarh (36.3 C), Tezpur (36.6 C), Silchar (36.4 C), Dhubri (35.2 C), Jorhat (36.2 C) and Pasighat (36.7 C).Weathermen said light to moderate rain is likely to be experienced in west, south and central parts of Assam, but pleasant weather is unlikely to return soon."We are hoping that rain god will favour us. The summer heat has become unbearable after rains wreaked havoc in Guwahati and other parts of Assam," said Ayush Agarwal , a trader from the Fancy Bazar area of the city.
