Ram Nath Kovind got 3 extra votes from Assam, says BJP; oppn cries foul

GUWAHATI: With Ram Nath Kovind all set to become the 14th President of India, BJP here said the NDA presidential candidate got three additional votes from Assam, indicating cross-voting from either Congress or All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).BJP state president Ranjit Kumar Das said, "I don't know who has voted from the opposition in favour of Kovind ji. But we have come to know that Kovind ji got three additional votes from the state. I can only tell that maybe someone from the opposition who are satisfied with the performance of NDA and our state government voted for Kovind ji." Congress legislator and leader of the opposition Debabrata Saikia asked BJP to declare the names of those who had cross-voted if the saffron party is so sure about it. "I know no Congress member will do this. Let them (BJP) give us names if someone from Congress is involved so that we can take action. Just issuing allegations won't do," Saikia said.AIUDF also refuted the charge. "Question of cross-voting from our party does not arise at all. All our MLAs and MPs were clear on the stand that opposition candidate stood for secularism. We are very sure none from our party has cross voted," AIUDF general secretary Aminul Islam said.
