Two more die of electrocution, taking toll to 33

The unofficial death toll due to electrocution in the state reached 33. GUWAHATI: Two people died of electrocution in two separate incidents in the state within a span of 24 hours. "We had warned the electricity department about the possibility of live wires snapping off and had asked the department to take precautions, but in vain. Sonowal has ordered the power department to immediately scan all transformers, live wires as well as electric posts across the state and repair them. Ali, a villager from the Rangjuli area in Goalpara, was travelling with his friend Aizal Haque, who sustained serious injuries.

GUWAHATI: Two people died of electrocution in two separate incidents in the state within a span of 24 hours. The unofficial death toll due to electrocution in the state reached 33. State power minister Pallab Lochan Das, however, said the department does not have the exact figures.One person, identified as Umed Ali , died after coming in contact with a live wire while he was crossing a lake on a boat. Ali, a villager from the Rangjuli area in Goalpara, was travelling with his friend Aizal Haque, who sustained serious injuries."We had warned the electricity department about the possibility of live wires snapping off and had asked the department to take precautions, but in vain. Umed died due to sheer negligence on the department's part," locals said.In another incident, a man - identified as Dipankar Gogoi - was electrocuted at his residence at the Ligiripukhuri area of Nazira in Sivasagar district. Gogoi's wife touched a faulty electric appliance and would have been electrocuted. Dipankar stepped in to save her but ended up getting electrocuted himself.Unconfirmed reports said another youth died of electrocution at Bokoliaghat in Karbi Anlgong district.Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday said power department officials of the district where human lives were lost due to electrocution would be held responsible for any such incident. Sonowal has ordered the power department to immediately scan all transformers, live wires as well as electric posts across the state and repair them. He also advocated for an extensive safety awareness programs in the state.Criticized heavily for the rampant deaths due to electrocution and poor maintenance of electric posts and live wire system across the state, the power department has recently announced to installation of earth leakage circuit breaker (ELCB) mandatory for all electrical service connections.Between 2010 and 2015, at least 410 people in the state were killed after being electrocuted accidentally.
