Hundreds take to the streets, demand justice for Rohingyas

SILCHAR: Hundreds of people took to the streets in Karimganj town on Monday to protest against the violence perpetrated against the Rohingyas of Myanmar. "Our Prime Minister should take up the issue with the Myanmar government and see that violence against the Rohingyas stops, so that they can live safely in their own country" Sahabul Islam Chaudhury, President, Popular Front. However, police stopped the march midway, only to allow them to stage a protest rally at the District Sports Association ground in the town.He also condemned the Centre's decision to push back Rohingya refugees who have taken shelter in India. "This is inhuman. When refugees from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan are welcomed in India by the government, why it has been treating Rohingyas differently," asked Chaudhury.A five-member delegation of the protesters' group were later allowed by police to meet the DC (Karimganj) to hand over separate memorandums addressed to the Prime Minister, Union home minister and Myanmar embassy in Delhi in support of their demands."Our Prime Minister should take up the issue with the Myanmar government and see that violence against the Rohingyas stops, so that they can live safely in their own country" Sahabul Islam Chaudhury, President, Popular Front.
