"At least 1,494 cases of human trafficking were registered in Assam out of total 6,877 cases of human trafficking were reported across the country. Trafficking has become so rampant in the state that Assam had topped the list of states affected by human trafficking.The state has recorded the highest number of human trafficking cases in the country in 2015. GUWAHATI: A 13-year-old trafficking victim from the city's Katabari area was rescued by the city's Gorchuk Police from Jind district in Haryana was brought back on Saturday. The girl went missing in April this year when she had gone on a road trip with a person named Mofisuddin."One Mofijuddin befriended her and lured her saying that he would take her to a road trip and to some religious destinations. The girl is from Meghalaya and was living here with her relatives," said Gorchuk police who were investigating the case.Mofisuddin has now been arrested and the girl was found in a Haryana village based on what he revealed during questioning. She had been sold off for forced marriage. "She was sold off for Rs 30,000 to one Kalmat Kashyap who married her. Kalmat and another person, Manji, have been taken into custody for further investigation," police sources added.Preliminary probe revealed that Manji, who is also from Haryana, had been staying in the city for a few years now. Police are now looking into the possible link between Manji and Mofisuddin. Sources said that several others might be involved too in the racket. Manisha Dev Barman, a lawyer working for human trafficking victims, said many girls from the state have been found to be trafficked to Haryana, mainly for forced marriage."Female foeticide in Haryana is a major factor, resulting in the trafficking of women from across the country to Haryana for forced marriages and the situation has only been worsened by widespread unemployment," she said.Previous police investigations have also found out that trafficking racketeers of the state have been exploring the situation in Haryana and in several places of Rajasthan. Trafficking has become so rampant in the state that Assam had topped the list of states affected by human trafficking.The state has recorded the highest number of human trafficking cases in the country in 2015. "At least 1,494 cases of human trafficking were registered in Assam out of total 6,877 cases of human trafficking were reported across the country. In some 1303 cases, the victims were minors," home ministry records state.
