37-year-old man gored to death in bull-taming event in Haveri

Haveri: A 37-year-old man was killed and six others injured in a bull-taming event at Devihosuru village of Haveri taluk on Sunday.Suresh Hombali was gored to death by a bull at the state-level event organized by the villagers, reportedly without taking necessary permission. “Besides denying them permission, we had told them that the department cannot take responsibility in case of untoward incidents during the event. However, the organizers stopped the event midway following the untoward incident. They said prizes will presented to the winners sometime next week.This is the second such incident in Haveri district in the recent past. A man was killed by a bull at Masuru village of Hirekeruru taluk two months ago.Bull-taming event is a traditional sport banned by the government keeping in view the associated risks.

He died while being rushed to a hospital.Six of those who have sustained minor injuries are being treated at a local government hospital, sources said. However, the organizers stopped the event midway following the untoward incident. They said prizes will presented to the winners sometime next week.This is the second such incident in Haveri district in the recent past. A man was killed by a bull at Masuru village of Hirekeruru taluk two months ago.Bull-taming event is a traditional sport banned by the government keeping in view the associated risks. However, the organizers seek permission from the police department or the district administration so they are kept informed about the event.Rural police station PSI U Shashidhar said the organizers had earlier applied for permission to hold the event. “Besides denying them permission, we had told them that the department cannot take responsibility in case of untoward incidents during the event. We also clarified them that the department will not deploy police personnel for the event,” the PSI said, adding: “We are not aware of a man being gored to death during the event in Devihosuru as the organizers have not yet contacted us. We will take legal action if the victim’s relatives lodge a complaint.”The sport, locally called ‘Hori Bedarisuva Spardhe’, is held on a par with Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu .
