Chanting bhajan, farmers hold protest over pending sugar bills

Belagavi: As part of their agitation demanding clearance of pending sugarcane dues from two factories, farmers chanted bhajans in front of the deputy commissioner’s office in Belagavi on Monday.Agitating under the leadership of Sidagouda Modagi, head of Bharatiya Krishik Samaj (Samyukta), accused Soubhagyalaxmi Sugar Factory , owned by district minister Ramesh Jarkiholi , and Shivsagar Sugar Factory of deliberately delaying payment of the pending bills since the past two years. They also demanded that MNREGA scheme be extended to farmers.Farmers are not even getting back their investment amount as the prices of cabbage, tomato, peanuts and cauliflower have crashed in the past one month.A quintal of cabbage is trading at Rs 100 while tomato is Rs 200-400. Despite the state government’s order, the district authority is not taking any action against the defaulting sugar factories, said Modagi.Earlier, homages were paid to farmer leader and MLA K S Puttannaiah , who died on Sunday night.Fair price for vegetablesFarmers, under the banner of Hasiru Sene and Karnataka State Farmers Association, Belagavi taluk unit, submitted a memorandum to the district administration, demanding fulfillment of their various demands, including fair price for vegetables.
