HUBBALLI: It will be mandatory to install closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras on the premises of upcoming houses and buildings in Hubballi-Dharwad, if a suggestion of the Hubballi-Dharwad Police Commissionerate is accepted by the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation.It is mandatory to adopt solar water heaters and rainwater harvesting systems before getting completion certificate (CC). However, many residents do not adhere to the second condition. Meanwhile, the police expect that their suggestion will be accepted. In order to prevent and detect crime and convict the guilty, the commissionerate has already strengthened the beat system Meanwhile, police commissioner M N Nagaraj told TOI that the beat police have been asked to request people who can afford to install CCTV cameras on their houses and commercial establishments, to do so.DCP (crime and traffic) B S Nemagoud said the poor find it difficult to install CCTV cameras. However, the middle class and rich can install them. "Our staff has been asked to approach them. CCTV cameras help detect crime scientifically. Several cases were solved thanks to CCTV cameras. We are installing CCTV cameras in many parts of the twin-cities. We are expecting cooperation from the people to install the cameras," he said."We are also asking the HDMC to make it mandatory to install CCTV cameras in upcoming houses and commercial establishments before giving building completion certificate or for renewal. People construct houses with lakhs of rupees. The cost of installation of CCTV cameras is between Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000. The cameras will ensure safety of people and their properties besides helping detect crime and c onvict the guilty," he said, adding that he will meet the HDMC commissioner to apprise him of the need to make it mandatory to install cameras.
