Despite entry ban, trucks enter cities

Though there is a ban, trucks continue to enter the twin cities.Motorists say the entry of trucks has increased the traffic problem. HUBBALLI: The entry of heavily loaded trucks during daytime has gone out of hand in the twin cities, adding to the traffic woes. Though work on the ring road has begun, it is progressing at snail’s pace. “While road works in these areas are causing traffic jams, the entry of heavy trucks has made it worse. To ease traffic, they have restricted the entry of heavy trucks into the city from 6am to 10pm.

HUBBALLI: The entry of heavily loaded trucks during daytime has gone out of hand in the twin cities, adding to the traffic woes. Due to lack of truck terminals, the drivers are bringing their vehicles into the city.The twin cities roads are narrow and dusty and riddled with potholes. Motorists are finding it difficult to move their vehicles on these roads. Police too are struggling to control traffic every day. To ease traffic, they have restricted the entry of heavy trucks into the city from 6am to 10pm. Though there is a ban, trucks continue to enter the twin cities.Motorists say the entry of trucks has increased the traffic problem. Nitish Jain, a private company employee, said the areas where traffic gets stuck include Rani Channamma Circle, Karwar Road, Bankapur Circle, Neeligin Road, Deshpande Nagar, Desai Circle, Sarvodaya Circle, Ambedkar Circle, Hosur Circle and Indi Pump. “While road works in these areas are causing traffic jams, the entry of heavy trucks has made it worse. Though traffic police are deployed here, the situation has become uncontrollable,” he said.Residents say motorists are taking alternative routes which mostly go through residential areas to avoid traffic jams on major roads. Many such areas also witness traffic jams throughout the day.Police say trucks are entering the city due to the lack of a ring road and truck terminals. Trucks coming from Tarihal, Gabbur, Karwar, Gadag and Vijayapura are forced to enter the city to reach other destinations due to the lack of a ring road. Trucks coming from Gadag and Vijayapura can reach Karwar Road, bypass and Dharwad only after entering Channamma Circle. Vehicles coming from Karwar are forced to enter Channamma Circle to reach Gadag and Vijapyapura Road.“Due to the lack of a terminal , trucks are parked on the road till 10 pm. Many truck drivers are ready to cough up a penalty for entering the city when the ban is in place. Though work on the ring road has begun, it is progressing at snail’s pace. Once the ring road is constructed, the traffic issue will be resolved to a great extent,” said a police officer.Deputy Commissioner of police (crime and traffic) B S Nemagoud said, "We have requested theDC to construct a terminal for the trucks.”
