Ballari: Celebrations broke out on Thursday at Kalenahalli , a hamlet in Hoovina Hadagali taluk of Ballari district . The villagers were welcoming the first NEKRTC bus as it rolled into the village road.Kalenahalli, which is a mix of modern and traditional, has only 55 houses, a population of 258, and is 3.5km from the hobli and 18km from the taluk headquarters. The bus will stop at the village twice a day: Once at 9am, after which it will move to Allahalli tanda, and then on its way back, it will stop again at 5pm.The bus will be a huge help to schoolchildren, the public and patients, who have to reach their destinations either by foot, bike, car or bullock cart. The village has up to Class 5 in its government school, but those who take up further study at the school in Hirehadagali hobli, have to depend on private transport. This is the reason why most of the girls drop out of school.Strangely, the village, which has power supply by Gescom, all-weather roads, and is a beneficiary of state and central government schemes, was not connected to the government transport grid. It was when the village youths approached local MLA P T Parameswara Naik and gave a memorandum, seeking government bus service to their village, that Naik responded and endorsed their appeal. He also sent it to the Hoovinahadagali depot manger to take necessary action.Based on the MLA’s recommendations, the depot manager made all arrangements to send a bus to Kalenahalli village. Around 9am Wednesday, when the big red bus drove in, villagers hailed it and held a small ritual. They brought coconut and tied the bus with mango leaves, then broke the coconut, completed the puja and distributed sweets. The bus was good to go.Basavaraj, a villager, told TOI, “The bus will be very helpful to school and college students, patients and the aged. After we requested our MLA last week, he took personal interest and made all the arrangements for a bus. It is the first time we have seen a bus in our village, and are very happy.”NEKRTC officials said that following the MLA’s personal request, they visited the village and studied the road condition and the number of commuters before starting this route. We are planning to extend it to connect other villages too, he said.
