Over 1500 schools unsafe in Belagavi dist

Belagavi: The education department has claimed 1,504 buildings in government schools are in a dilapidated condition in Belagavi district . Kannada activist Ashok Chandaragi revealed that Belagavi educational district had bagged third place, while Chikkodi took sixth in the SSLC exams this year.However, Chandaragi said the government cannot expect good results if it cannot provide even basic infrastructure. Some alumni associations are willing to construct new classrooms and the authorities need to support them, Chandaragi said. Although the state government has been apprised of the situation, no action has been taken.While some schools could do with repairs, others need to be demolished and rebuilt.

Fearing imminent collapse, teachers have locked many classrooms across schools while roofs in others are leaking.DDPIs (deputy director of public instruction) in both educational districts have submitted proposals to the chief executive officer of the zilla panchayat, demanding Rs150 crore to renovate the buildings. The ZP CEO in turn had forwarded the proposals to the government two months ago, but there has been no response as yet.A B Pundalik, DDPI, Belagavi said: “We have already submitted a proposal to the higher authorities to conduct repair work. A district-level meeting of officers will be held on Tuesday to discuss this issue. We are hoping funds will be released for this proposal.”10 classrooms locked upA government Kannada medium school — No 7 in Fulbaggalli, Belagavi — has a total of 14 classrooms, but classes are being conducted in only four while the other 10 have been locked up. Similarly, the government Urdu school — built in 1947 — at Anagol area in Belagavi had over 300 students, but due to the pathetic condition of the buildings, the strength has fallen to less than 100.At the Kannada primary school in Tigadi village, Bailhongal taluk, students cannot access classrooms as rain has turned the front of the school premises (ground) into a mini lake. At the Kannada medium school in Subhash Nagar, Khanapur taluk 138 students of various standards have been crammed into a single classroom.Despite this, results have been impressive.
