WhatsApp groups aims to prevent attacks on doctors

HUBBALLI: In a bid to ensure safety of doctors during emergencies and to prevent violence against doctors in hospitals, Hubballi-Dharwad police commissionerate will create WhatsApp groups for doctors and doctors soon.The commissionerate has been working on this after IMA office-bearers expressed their concern about increasing violence against doctors. BS Nemagouda, DCP (crime & traffic) said, "There are also instructions from the Supreme Court and the government to ensure safety of doctors and prevent violence against them. Police assured us they would take all measures to prevent violence against doctors. "Only 5% of patients or their relatives create violence in hosptials," said Dr GB Sattur, president, IMA, Hubballi branch. We'll create groups at each police station limit in which all hospitals and clinics under it will be members.

After talks with the Indian Medical Association , Hubballi branch, we decided to create WhatsApp groups."He added, "The groups will be created at two levels between doctors and police stations. We'll create groups at each police station limit in which all hospitals and clinics under it will be members. The station inspector and local beat constable of each police station and staff of each hospital will be part of the group. We'll create another group which will have IMA office-bearers, police commissioner, ACPs and DCP."If a mob attacks a hospital, doctors or staff can contact the local police station inspector and local beat constable who are part of the group. "Our main intention is to instill confidence among doctors," he said.Dr Sachin Revankar, secretary, IMA, Hubballi branch said, "We have consulted with police to discuss security issues and threats faced by doctors. Police assured us they would take all measures to prevent violence against doctors. We're gathering information of hospitals and clinics under each police station limit and we'll submit them details to the police commissionerate."According to a survey by IMA, 75% of doctors face one or other type of violence in India. In the past month, 4-5 ugly scenes have occurred in Hubballi. "Only 5% of patients or their relatives create violence in hosptials," said Dr GB Sattur, president, IMA, Hubballi branch.
