Hubballi lawyers refuse to defend rape accused

Uddappa Ramappa Ganiger, the accused, was then arrested by Harugeri police.Police said Ganiger, who was the victim’s mother’s brother, had taken the child to a sugarcane field and raped her. He also strangled her to death when she tried to cry. Later, he buried half of her body in the field to destroy evidence.When police reached the spot based on the information from villagers, they found the girl’s head buried in the soil while her private parts were open and bleeding. Police investigated the case and arrested the accused within a few hours.The case was booked under sections - 376, 366 (A), 302 and 201 and 4,8 and 12 of The Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act-2012 (POCSO).After the incident, various Hindu and Muslim organizations, Kannada outfits and social and human rights organizations had protested demanding the death penalty to the accused.According to a reliable course, the accused has not got a single advocate to argue his case so far. Considering this, the district principle and sessions judge has referred this case to legal aid cell.Belagavi Bar Association president S S Kivadasannavar told TOI that although getting legal aid is the right of the accused, the decision of advocates of Belagavi to not argue such a heinous case is appreciable. It’s a good message to society and a strong lesson to criminals, he said.
