Educated falling prey to conmen has cops worried

DHARWAD: The police department is worried over increasing number of cyber crimes in the twin cities. Ravindra said the cybercrime station was being flooded with complaints of such crimes.The DCP also appealed to people to inform the cyber police station by calling 0836-2233567 if they receive calls from anyone seeking details of their bank accounts. The officers are more worried over the fact that highly educated and so-called intellectuals are falling prey to fraudsters.In November alone, four professors from Karnatak University and one from the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad have lost money to the tune of Rs 14.12 lakh to conmen.DCP (law and order) Ravindra Gadadi said these professors had responded to telephone calls from fraudsters posing as bank managers and had revealed details about their ATM cards.Using this information, the cyber criminals had obtained OTP number on their mobile phones and got the money transferred online from the professors’ accounts.While four professors from Karnatak University have lost Rs 3,11, 747, one professor from UAS, Dharwad has lost Rs 9,99,999 the police said.
