At this point, Shettar objected and said, “We are not opposing the Indira Canteen scheme as it will help poor people. In such circumstances if HDMC is asked to bear 70% of cost of the canteen, it will be an additional burden on it. Despite this we will check the issue and try to settle the matter.”Deshpande inaugurated Indira Canteen s at Unkal Lake, KIMS premises, near new bus stand on Gokul Road and at Bengeri Saturday market. The district minister too has not bothered to do anything and yet is putting additional burden on the HDMC, which is unfair. Former CM Shettar, MP Pralhad Joshi , MLA Prasad Abbaiyya, MLC Srinivas Mane and deputy mayor Menaka Hurali were present at the event.

HUBBALLI: District minister R V Deshpande faced an embarrassing situation during the inauguration of the Indira Canteen at Unkal on Saturday when opposition leader Jagadish Shettar opposed the state government’s decision seeking 70% contribution from the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) to run the canteens.Deshpande inaugurated the canteen and said the state government bears 30% of its running cost while the rest has to be borne by HDMC. At this point, Shettar objected and said, “We are not opposing the Indira Canteen scheme as it will help poor people. But currently the financial condition of HDMC is not up to the mark. In such circumstances if HDMC is asked to bear 70% of cost of the canteen, it will be an additional burden on it. The state government should reconsider this decision,” he urged. He also the state government is yet to release over Rs 114 crore towards salaries and Rs 42 crore towards performance grants. “There are many other dues but the government is not doing anything to release the pending grants. When Siddaramaiah was the chief minister, he had promised to release the money but did nothing. The district minister too has not bothered to do anything and yet is putting additional burden on the HDMC, which is unfair. The government should bare the cost of running the canteens fully,” he added.Mayor Sudhir Saraf and former mayor Veeranna Savadi too endorsed Shettar’s statement and tried to convince Deshpande about the Rs 12 crore additional burden on HDMC.Deshpande then said “I don't want to get into arguments but will check what best can be done to release grants. On the pending pension funds, we inquired with the finance department and urban development department and officials said HDMC had sent the proposal very late. Despite this we will check the issue and try to settle the matter.”Deshpande inaugurated Indira Canteen s at Unkal Lake, KIMS premises, near new bus stand on Gokul Road and at Bengeri Saturday market. Former CM Shettar, MP Pralhad Joshi , MLA Prasad Abbaiyya, MLC Srinivas Mane and deputy mayor Menaka Hurali were present at the event.
