Doctors not very keen to serve in HDMC hosps

Hubballi: Even though Hubballi Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) is ready to pay more than Rs 1 lakh as salary and also provide free accommodation to doctors to serve in its hospitals in the city, no doctor is willing to take this offer.According to sources, HDMC has been advertising this offer but no doctor has shown interest to work at its hospitals. As a result, service at the corporation’s hospitals is getting affected. HDMC has been trying to strengthen health care service at its hospitals but all services are taking a back seat due to dearth of specialists, said a doctor.“We have been advertising that specialists will get more than Rs 1 lakh as salary, get free accommodation and other perks too. But no one is coming forward. We have some specialists’ doctors who work on honorarium and their service will be available for only a stipulated time. Some of the PHCs have Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) doctors. HDMC has invited applications from specialist doctors on honorarium basis for a period of one year and interviews will be conducted soon.Though all the PHCs are going to be upgraded to urban health centres under National Urban Health Mission, the health department has given privilege to HDMC to appoint doctors.At present BAMS doctors are offering their services at most of the PHCs on honorarium basis.
