Probe NGOs opposing Hubballi-Ankola railway project: Karwar MLA

Karwar: On a day when protesters blocked NH 66 at London Bridge here on Thursday demanding early completion of the Hubballi-Ankola railway line Karwar MLA Roopali Naik called for a high-level inquiry into the NGOs opposing the project.She suspected that the NGOs are being used to oppose the railway project along with two major defence projects — INS Kadamba and Kaiga Atomic Power Station . “Transport lobbies are using some NGOs and environmentalists to block the project. In a statement, she also demanded a study on the NGOs opposing the project and investigation into their source of income.Roopali said that she met railway minister Piyush Goyal in New Delhi last week and urged him to complete the ambitious project.Earlier in the day, police detained protesters for blocking NH 66. We will teach these people a lesson,” he said. They were released later.

They were released later. The protesters, under the banner of Hubbali-Ankola Railway Line Forum , said that the government should not shelve the project due to pressure from environmentalists.Addressing the protesters, Karnataka Chaluvali Vatal Paksha leader Vatal Nagaraj said that failure on the government’s part to take up the project would result in the biggest people’s movement in the region.Ramanand Nayak, president, Hubbali-Ankola Railwayline Forum, said that North Karnataka and coastal region of the country will benefit from the project. “Transport lobbies are using some NGOs and environmentalists to block the project. We will teach these people a lesson,” he said.
