Belagavi: City police arrested BJP Yuva Morcha president Nikhil Murkute after photos of him cutting his birthday cake with a sword went viral.Nikhil had thrown a birthday party for his friends at his Gandhi Nagar residence on February 1 and Belagavi (North) MLA Anil Benake and former Belagavi (Rural) MLA Sanjay Patil had attended it.Nikhil cut the cake with a sword in-front of Benake and friends and later uploaded the pictures and video clippings on social media. The clippings show the MLA along with Nikhil cutting the cake with a sword. Based on the clippings police arrested Nikhil for allegedly creating terror among people.According to police sources, Nikhil is a rowdy sheeter and there are 10-12 criminal cases including attempt to murder and SC ST (Prevention of Atrocities Act) against him in different police stations. There are six cases registered against him at Malmaruti police station alone.Murkute is a close aid of Benake. He had also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Sambra Airport here during the PM’s visit. Murkute profile picture on Facebook is that of him with Modi. Police have booked Murkute under Section 110 of the Code Of Criminal Procedure, 1973, used for habitual offenders. Nikhil has been sent to judicial custody for 10 days.
