NK AgroMet Forecasting Centre at UAS will help improve yield

Dharwad/Hubballi: The University of Agricultural Sciences in Dharwad is now equipped with a new centre to provide accurate information on weather. In the recent past, farmers, particularly in North Karnataka, have been facing the wrath of nature. It would then send that data back to Bengaluru, which would disseminate it to farmers through various channels. During monsoon, gusty winds, powerful lightning too are playing spoilsport causing huge damage to life and property. The centre will also keep farmers abreast about the right timing of using pesticide, harvesting, etc.,” he added.“Earlier we used to gather weather reports from each district and send it to India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Dharwad/Hubballi: The University of Agricultural Sciences in Dharwad is now equipped with a new centre to provide accurate information on weather. North Karnataka AgroMet Forecasting and Research Centre NKAFC ) will be operational on the university’s campus from February 14.Established by the Indian Metrological Department and the ministry of earth sciences, it will be inaugurated by Union science and technology minister Dr Harsh Vardhan at the Farmers’ Knowledge Centre in UAS at 2pm on Thursday.Climate change, global warming, untimely rains and the like have been a major hurdle to farmers to get good yield. In the recent past, farmers, particularly in North Karnataka, have been facing the wrath of nature. Drought has become a regular feature in the region. During monsoon, gusty winds, powerful lightning too are playing spoilsport causing huge damage to life and property. The new centre is aimed at minimizing the damage by offering timely information on agro-climatic conditions to farmers, particularly the seven districts of the region along with Uttara Kannada.Dr R H Patil, head of department of the agricultural meteorological department, UAS, Dharwad, told TOI that district-wise information about weather forecasting, crop pattern and other matters are currently being given through the state meteorology department.“By establishing the AgroMet Forecasting and Research Centre, we can disseminate taluk-wise information about weather condition, crop pattern, method of harvesting different crops, using of technology and other methods to yield better results. The centre will also keep farmers abreast about the right timing of using pesticide, harvesting, etc.,” he added.“Earlier we used to gather weather reports from each district and send it to India Meteorological Department (IMD). It would then send that data back to Bengaluru, which would disseminate it to farmers through various channels. After the research centre is established, we can directly send weather related information to farmers,” said Dr Patil.IMD, UAS and Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre will work together to get accurate weather details through weather stations being set up at each taluk in all seven districts of North Karnataka., They will compile that report and send accurate information to farmers, he added.“We will disseminate information about the weather for the next five days to farmers on every Tuesday and Friday,” he said.
