HDMC to start Phase 2 of filling potholes in May

It had spent Rs 4.5 crore for filling potholes by taking up wardwise and zonalwise filling work. To cover up its fault, HDMC is now wasting taxpayers’ money by taking up the second phase. HDMC has faced public ire for shoddy work since it failed to take up proper patchwork to fill potholes in the first phase. HDMC should publish a report card on condition of potholes filled by it in the first phase. We’ve decided to take up works at a cost of Rs 1.2 crore in zonal office, 1, 2,3 and 12 in executive engineer Dharwad division, Rs 1.2 crore works in zonal office 8, 9, 10, and 11 and Rs 1.2 crore works at zonal office 4,5,6, and 7 in Hubballi North division.

Hubballi: People have to wait for a few more months to have pothole-free roads in the twin cities as the Hubballi-Dharawd Municipal Corporation is all set to commence its second phase of filling them in May. HDMC has faced public ire for shoddy work since it failed to take up proper patchwork to fill potholes in the first phase. It had spent Rs 4.5 crore for filling potholes by taking up wardwise and zonalwise filling work. Within a few days, many roads, which had been repaired, were back to square one, exposing the shoddy work. Some corporators had openly expressed their concern over the poor work. Now, HDMC has prepared a proposal to fill up potholes in the second phase at an estimated cost of Rs 3.6 crore.Sources said as the election model code of conduct could come into effect in one or two weeks, HDMC officials are trying hard to get their estimated proposal approved at the general body meeting on Thursday to complete all formalities of calling for tenders.Shakeel Ahmed, commissioner, HDMC, said, “As per the instruction of the deputy commissioner to fill up potholes before the monsoon by calling for zonalwise tenders at a recent HDMC review meeting, we have prepared a proposal. The total estimate is Rs 3.6 crore for all 12 zonal offices.”He added that they’ve requested sanction of this amount in financial year 2019-20 which begins in April. “We have submitted this proposal before the council to get administrative approval to go ahead with our plan to call for tenders and complete other formalities before the model code of conduct comes into effect. If everything goes as planned, we’ll commence the second phase of pothole-filling work in May,” he added.‘Clarification needed’HDMC should first clarify about roads which are still being under annual maintenance period by contractors. It is the contractors’ responsibility to fill potholes during this period. Potholes are a result of unscientific roads built by HDMC, not rain. To cover up its fault, HDMC is now wasting taxpayers’ money by taking up the second phase. HDMC should publish a report card on condition of potholes filled by it in the first phase. It’s all officials’ gimmick to loot taxpayer’s money.Dr MC Sindhur | civic activist
