From humble beginnings to a minister

His works was noticed by by former chief minister Bangarappa , who motivated him to contest the 1994 assembly election as Karnataka Congress Party (KCP) candidate. Hailing from a poor family of four brothers and three sisters in Yaraguppi village, Shivalli studied at SK Arts College in Hubballi.However, poverty did not allow him to complete his BA. He later joined the Congress.Though Bangarappa moved to the SP, BJP and even floated another regional party, Shivalli remained a staunch Congressman. His victory in the 2018 assembly election, saw him get a ministerial berth.He is survived by wife Kusuma and daughters Deepa, Roopa and son AmarshivaShivalli was inducted as minister on December 22, 2018. His constant efforts and connect with the people in his constituency ensured he won in 2013 and 2018.A Kuruba, he was hopeful of a berth in former chief minister Siddaramaiah’s cabinet.

Hubballi: Channabasappa Satyappa Shivalli, 57, tasted success and failure in equal measure. Interestingly, he started his career as president of Dr Rajkumar Abhimani Balaga. Hailing from a poor family of four brothers and three sisters in Yaraguppi village, Shivalli studied at SK Arts College in Hubballi.However, poverty did not allow him to complete his BA. Instead, it pushed him into activism. He floated Dr Raj Abhimani Balaga in his village in 1985. His works was noticed by by former chief minister Bangarappa , who motivated him to contest the 1994 assembly election as Karnataka Congress Party (KCP) candidate. But he lost the election with a margin of over 19,000 votes.By 1999, KCP merged with Congress. Shivalli was identified as a follower of Bangarappa. After his defeat, Congress shied away from issuing him a ticket in the 1999 election. Shivalli contested as an independent and won with a margin of over 11,000 votes. He later joined the Congress.Though Bangarappa moved to the SP, BJP and even floated another regional party, Shivalli remained a staunch Congressman. He did not lose hope even after losing the 2003 and 2008 assembly elections. His constant efforts and connect with the people in his constituency ensured he won in 2013 and 2018.A Kuruba, he was hopeful of a berth in former chief minister Siddaramaiah’s cabinet. But it did not happen. However, he was rewarded with the post of parliamentary secretary to the CM in 2013. His victory in the 2018 assembly election, saw him get a ministerial berth.He is survived by wife Kusuma and daughters Deepa, Roopa and son AmarshivaShivalli was inducted as minister on December 22, 2018. He was minister for exactly three months. Food poisoning dramaShivalli was admitted to KIMS early on February 4 after he suffered from food poisoning. He and his gunman were the only one to fall sick after eating upma.In 2002, Shivalli had alleged that his political rivals had paid Rs five lakh to his aide to poison him. But his alleged rival who he was hinting at denied the allegations and threatened legal action. In his police complaint, Shivalli never mentioned anybody.
