Horticulture department plans mango tourism this year

The horticulture department is all set to introduce "Mango Tourism".The Dharwad office of the department will organize the "Mango Tourism" on April 21 and 25, while the trip to mango groves will be held in Hubballi on April 24 and 28. Visitors will be taken to Kalakeri and Halligeri in Dharwad taluk and Pale in Hubballi taluk. Under this programme, opportunity has been given to the general public to visit mango fields, gain knowledge on the variety of fruit grown there, the methods involved in natural ripening of the fruit and also the value addition. Transportation facility will be provided by the department and the trip begins at 9.30am.

Progressive mango growers have been identified in these villages and visit will be to their groves.Informing this to reporters here on Monday, zilla panchayat CEO R Snehal stated that the new concept of eco-village is becoming popular in Bengaluru and many fields and plantations are developed where organic products are grown and along with it entertainment like amusement park, watersports and the like are being developed in the villages.Taking a leaf out of this, the horticulture department is introducing "Mango Tourism" this year. Under this programme, opportunity has been given to the general public to visit mango fields, gain knowledge on the variety of fruit grown there, the methods involved in natural ripening of the fruit and also the value addition. This apart, people can directly purchase mangoes from the fields at a subsidized price. The mangoes, which are naturally ripened, are sold at Rs 80 per kg and each family or person has to compulsorily purchase a minimum of 6kg.Officials stated that the department has set up naturally ripening unit at APMC in Amargol where more than 20 tonnes of mangoes will be ripened. Currently, mangoes are fetching up to Rs 45,000 per tonne, they added.
