Doctors call off strike, after talks with government

BELAGAVI: Doctors from private hospitals who were on a strike, called it off following an assurance from the state government to meet majority of their demands.The development comes as a welcome relief to thousands of patients at the strike-hit private hospitals across Karnataka . The opposition, BJP , had alleged that more than 25 people died during the strike after they failed to get timely treatment at private hospitals.On Friday, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah along health minister K R Ramesh Kumar held marathon talks with representatives of various associations of doctors and came to amicable settlement after the government agreed to majority of their demands.The meeting was held to resolve the deadlock after the doctors launched a protest to dilute the legislation by dropping stringent provisions, including capping of prices, jail term and penalty for erring doctors, in the Karnataka Private Medical Establishment Bill, 2017 that is expected to be tabled in the ongoing winter session of the state legislature.
