Government blinks on stringent clauses; doctors end protest

BELAGAVI: After an ultimatum from the Karnataka high court and hectic parleys with the state government, private doctors and hospitals on Friday returned to their campuses, calling off their protest against the Karnataka Private Medical Establishments (Amendment) Bill, 2017. The breakthrough in talks came hours after the court issued an ultimatum to the doctors to either end their strike by 4.30 pm Friday or face the consequences. The bench chastised the doctors for taking the issue to the streets, and said 'right to life' was a basic human right as also a fundamental right Chief minister Siddaramaiah , who spoke to the representatives of doctors' associations, described the negotiations as fruitful. Also, the government is learnt to have agreed to cap prices only for patients availing treatment under the government's Universal Health Scheme.

BELAGAVI: After an ultimatum from the Karnataka high court and hectic parleys with the state government, private doctors and hospitals on Friday returned to their campuses, calling off their protest against the Karnataka Private Medical Establishments (Amendment) Bill, 2017. Chief minister Siddaramaiah , who spoke to the representatives of doctors' associations, described the negotiations as fruitful. "The government agreed to concede some of their demands and rejected a few," he said. Sources privy to the proceedings said, the CM took the doctors to task for going on strike even though the bill was yet to be tabled.Sources said the government has agreed to reduce stiff penalty clauses and continue the jail term for erring doctors — a throwback to the 2007 version of the Bill. Also, the government is learnt to have agreed to cap prices only for patients availing treatment under the government's Universal Health Scheme. Indian Medical Association's state chief HN Ravindra said they agreed to call off their strike following positive response from the government.The revised bill is expected to be tabled in the legislative assembly on Monday.
