Yashoda Hospitals has introduced an intra-operative MRI machine that would reduce the need for repetitive surgeries, doctors here said on Wednesday. The procedure takes a few minutes, Anandh Balasubramaniam, senior neurosurgeon at the hospital said. But The shift in brain’s position after excision presents a challenge and risk for error, which can be overcome with intra-operative MRI,” said Anandh Balasubramaniam, senior neurosurgeon at the hospital. “The outcome for patients will greatly improve with such technologies while cost burden on treatment will be reduced by way of preventing multiple surgeries,” he said. This would prevent repeat surgeries in future, he added.

more-in Yashoda Hospitals has introduced an intra-operative MRI machine that would reduce the need for repetitive surgeries, doctors here said on Wednesday. Presenting their experience with the machine after 100 surgeries, neurosurgeons said the technology would help patients with brain tumours, Parkinson’s disease and other conditions of the brain where imaging can help cross-check the extent of an operative procedure. “With technology, neurosurgery has improved over the years. But The shift in brain’s position after excision presents a challenge and risk for error, which can be overcome with intra-operative MRI,” said Anandh Balasubramaniam, senior neurosurgeon at the hospital. The iMRI at Yashoda is a three Tesla machine, the first-of-its-kind in the country. If a surgeon wants an MRI during surgery, the patient would be wrapped with sterile material and moved to the machine, in a room adjoining the operation theatre. The procedure takes a few minutes, Anandh Balasubramaniam, senior neurosurgeon at the hospital said. MRI images can show the extent to which a surgery is done, and whether more excision is needed. This would prevent repeat surgeries in future, he added. Three patients, who underwent surgery after installation of the device, shared their experience with mediapersons. Managing director of the hospital group, G.S. Rao, said, such technologies accrue significant benefits to patients. “The outcome for patients will greatly improve with such technologies while cost burden on treatment will be reduced by way of preventing multiple surgeries,” he said.
