Cops refused to file rape case, woman alleges

Following the writ petition, the High Court has ordered Ms. Murthy to appear before it on Monday. A 32-year-old woman, who alleged that she was raped by a Singareni Collieries employee for more than 15 days in February, has filed a writ petition after cops refused to register an FIR. “Due to political pressure from the local legislator, the police refused to book the case against Pratap. The woman was then taken to various places, including Kondagattu, Vemulawada, Dharmapuri and Bhadrachalam where she was allegedly raped. Identifying the Singareni Collieries employee as Pratap, she said he kidnapped her five-year-old daughter and threatened to kill her.

The woman, a native of Gopalpur village in Manthani mandal of Peddapalli district, claimed that she visited Manthani police station to lodge a complaint against Sunkari Pratap, but the cops, while refusing to register an FIR, threatened to book a prostitution case against her. Identifying the Singareni Collieries employee as Pratap, she said he kidnapped her five-year-old daughter and threatened to kill her. The woman was then taken to various places, including Kondagattu, Vemulawada, Dharmapuri and Bhadrachalam where she was allegedly raped. “Due to political pressure from the local legislator, the police refused to book the case against Pratap. The woman also approached Assistant Commissioner of Police-Godavarikhani, Rakshitha Murthy, but in vain,” said P.V. Nagamani, the woman’s advocate. Following the writ petition, the High Court has ordered Ms. Murthy to appear before it on Monday.
