Thousands bid adieu to Nandamuri Harikrishna

HYDERABAD: Cries of Tiger zinda hai, Tiger malli pudathadu (Tiger will be reborn)” and “Johar Harikrishna Johar Johar” rent the air as thousands made their way to Mehdipatnam in the city on Thursday to pay their last respects to departed actor-politician Nandamuri Harikrishna Hundreds of emotional fans also clambered onto the foot overbridge near NMDC to catch a glimpse of the actor’s last journey. Scores of people lost their chappals in the melee but continued to walk in the procession. Fans and TDP supporters gathered at Mehdipatnam threw rose petals on the cortege as the procession began.While Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Harikrishna’s younger brother and actor Balakrishna, who is also Hindupur MLA, acknowledged the crowds, Harikrishna’s son Jr NTR, deep in grief, kept to himself. Nandamuri family members followed close behind the cortege in a number of cars bearing ‘Nandamuri family’ stickers.Hundreds of fans and followers of Harikrishna joined the funeral procession.Though members of the public were initially allowed in to pay their respects, they were stopped later and not allowed beyond the barricades set up on the left side of the road.A huge police contingent, posted at the lane leading to the house to regulate the flow of people since morning, had put up barricades, only allowing in family members, politicians, actors and other prominent visitors.However, the public, which was waiting patiently for the funeral procession to begin, raised slogans as soon the decked-up vehicle carrying Harikrishna came out of the lane.Nandamuri Harikrishna was laid to rest with full state honours.The sea of humanity accompanying the cortege forced the police to stop vehicular traffic for nearly 15 minutes after the procession started.There were also some tense moments when a large number of people, eager to join the funeral procession, broke through the police cordon and nearly caused a stampede.
